Movement
A movement names one kind of stock event: goods received against a purchase order, goods issued to a sales order, stock written off, stock sent to another warehouse. Every line of every stock document carries a movement. The movement says whether stock goes up or down, and, with the item's posting group, which accounts the line posts to.
What it is for
Journals offer only their own movements, and the posting profile finds the inventory and offset accounts by movement. A client that wants breakage and expiry posted to different expense accounts gets two movements, each with its own lines in the posting profile.
The one rule people get wrong: the DCInd of the movement is what makes a line add stock (Debit) or take it away (Credit). On adjustments, movements and transfers the movement is chosen on each line, so one document can both add and remove stock.
Every field in plain words
| Field | What it means | What to put |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | The code | Unique. Delivered movements keep their codes |
| Name | What users see in lists | Write-off breakage |
| Block | Stops it being chosen | Leave unticked |
| Movement Direction | The family the movement belongs to: receipt, issue, adjustment, movement, transfer out, transfer in, split, return, revaluation, closing | Pick from the list. It decides which documents can use the movement |
| DCInd | Debit adds stock, Credit removes it | D or C |
| Reason Required | A line with this movement must give a Reason | Tick for write-offs. Inventory Adjustment, Adjustment Request, Inventory Movement, Inventory Movement Request and Item To Item refuse the line without one |
| Reverse Movement | The movement of the other half of a transfer | On a transfer-out movement, name the transfer-in movement. Transfers read it to build the receiving line |
| Return Movement | The movement a Delivery Return uses for lines that came from this issue movement | On an issue-to-customer movement, name its return movement |
| Helpobject Header, Helpobject Lines, Required Multiple | Which document list opens when the movement is chosen on a document that copies from another one (for example Picking List copying a sales order), and whether several documents may be picked at once | Delivered values. Change only with a list that exists |
| Display Required, Display Query | When ticked, Picking List shows a name for the origin document picked, worked out by the query | Delivered values |
| Required Customer, Required Vendor | Shown only for the movement direction MOV | Recorded only. No document checks them |
| Use In Inventory Movement | Recorded only | Nothing reads it |
| Predefine | Marks a delivered movement | Recorded only |
How to configure it
- Copy a delivered movement of the same direction and change only the name and the reason rule.
- Add the new movement to the journal that should offer it, and add its lines to the inventory posting profile, or saving a document with it is refused for want of an account.
- For a new transfer pair, set Reverse Movement on the transfer-out movement.
Scenarios
- Breakage and expiry posted to different accounts. Two adjustment movements with DCInd C, both with Reason Required. Each gets its own expense account in the posting profile.
- A sample issue that needs a reason. Tick Reason Required on the issue movement.
What it is connected to
- Inventory Adjustment, Inventory Movement - movement chosen on each line.
- Item Transfer - reads Reverse Movement.
- Delivery Return - reads Return Movement.
- Transaction Journal and Posting Profile - journals list their movements, and the posting profile finds accounts by movement.
If something looks wrong
- "Line ID: 1 - Reason is mandatory for Movement: ..." - the movement has Reason Required. Pick a Reason on the line.
- "Movement cannot be empty" - the document or the line has no movement. Pick the journal first; it offers its movements.
- "Account is not configured in Posting Profile ... against Post Key ..." - the inventory posting profile has no account for this movement, the item's posting group and the post key. Add the line in the posting profile.
