Inventory Movement

The general-purpose stock movement. Each line names a movement that adds or removes stock; the other side of the posting is the offset account the journal names for that movement. It can stand alone, or be copied from an approved Inventory Movement Request.

When
Whenever stock goes in or out for a reason that is not a purchase, a sale, a transfer or a correction
Needs first
A journal whose movements carry an offset account

What it is for

It charges stock to an expense, a project, a cost centre, or brings it in from one. The journal does the accounting set-up: for each movement it names the offset account, optionally per item posting group.

The one rule people get wrong: if the journal has no offset account for the movement (and the item's posting group), Save is refused with "Please Configure Journal properly...". Fix the journal, not the document.

The journal also decides three things on this screen: whether a Vendor must be named, whether a Customer must be named, and whether the document must come from a movement request (Origin no becomes required).

Other screens create inventory movements by themselves: the subcontracting receipt consumes components with one, and a goods receipt for a project issues to the project with one. Those carry the mark of the document that made them and cannot be reversed here; reverse the document that made them.

An inventory movement can be edited until posted, and reversed; it cannot be deleted.

Toolbar

  • Copy from (Inventory Movement) - opens the list of movement requests to copy, as set on Inventory Origin.
  • Carrier details, Open voucher.

What happens on Save

Stock moves and the voucher posts each line between the inventory account and the movement's offset account from the journal. Lines copied from a request use the request's accounts.

What it is connected to

If something looks wrong

  • "Please Configure Journal properly, Cannot find movement of ..." - the journal does not carry this movement (for this item's posting group).
  • "Please Configure Journal properly, Account is not defined in ... this Movement" - the journal's movement line has no offset account.
  • "Basic Data - Item ... Movement Quantity: ... cannot exceed Balance Quantity: ... in Inventory Movement Request: ..."
  • "Line ID: ... - Reason is mandatory for Movement: ..."
  • "Cannot Reversed System Generated Vouchers" - this movement was made by another document. Reverse that one.
