Inventory Adjustment

The stock correction. Each line names an item, a movement that says whether stock goes up or down, a reason, and the quantity. Save corrects the stock and posts its value. This is also where opening stock is brought in.

Adjustment movements on the journal, with their accounts in the posting profile

What it is for

Stock that the system holds and the shelf holds differ. The adjustment brings the system in line and charges or credits the difference to the account the movement's posting profile names.

The one rule people get wrong: the movement is chosen on each line, not on the header. One adjustment can add some items and remove others. The DCInd column shows which way each line goes.

An adjustment cannot be edited or deleted after Save. Reverse it.

What happens on Save

  • Lines that add stock come in at the Cost Price typed (a moving-average item refuses a zero price; a standard-cost item with no price takes its standard cost). Lines that remove stock leave at the average cost of the posting date.
  • Lines that remove stock are refused if the stock is not there on the posting date, unless the item allows negative stock.
  • The voucher posts each line between the inventory account and the account the posting profile gives for that movement.

How to configure it

  • Make one adjustment movement per kind of difference you want to see separately in the accounts, each with Reason Required where a reason matters.
  • For opening stock, use an adjustment movement whose offset account is the opening balance account, and date the adjustment the day before go-live.

Scenarios

  • Monthly count in a supermarket. One adjustment per store: shortages on a Credit movement, surpluses on a Debit movement, each with its reason.
  • Go-live. One adjustment per warehouse with every item's quantity, batch and cost.
