Switch barcode on for a company
Four screens, filled in this order. Each one depends on the one before it. Skip one and the next has nothing to point at.
The order
- Legal Entity (OSLE): switch the company on. Open the company, find the Barcode group, tick Barcode Enabled. Leave Default Nomenclature and Barcode Prefix empty unless you already know you need them. Page: Legal Entity barcode switch.
- Barcode Nomenclature (OSBN): decide how codes are read. Two rule books are delivered:
DEFAULTfor everyday codes andGS1for supplier labels that follow the GS1 standard. Open them and read the rules before you create anything. Most companies need no new nomenclature, only an extra rule line when they have a code shape of their own. Page: Barcode Nomenclature. - Barcode Identity (OSBI): decide where each kind of code is looked up. A nomenclature says "this is an item code". An identity line says which table and column an item code is searched in. Lines for items and employees are delivered. Add one for each other kind of thing the company will scan and expect the system to find. Page: Barcode Identity.
- Barcode Assignment (OSBB): switch on each screen. Create one document for the company and add one line per screen that should scan or print. On each line tick Scan Enabled, Generate Enabled, or both, and tick Active. Then open the Actions link on the line to say what a scan does there, and the Template link to say how a code is built there. Page: Barcode Assignment.
What each switch actually controls
It is easy to tick a box and expect more from it than it does. This is what the system checks, and where.
| Switch | Screen | What it gates |
|---|---|---|
| Barcode Enabled | Legal Entity | Generating a code for a record. With it off, Generate barcode answers "barcode is not enabled for this company - switch it on in Legal Entity". It is not checked when a code is scanned. |
| Active | Nomenclature header | Whether the rule book is loaded at all. |
| Active | Identity line | Whether the resolver is tried. |
| Active | Assignment process line | Whether the screen has an assignment. An inactive line is the same as no line. |
| Scan Enabled | Assignment process line | Whether the screen listens for the scanner and shows the Scan barcode button. |
| Generate Enabled | Assignment process line | Whether the screen shows Generate barcode, and whether the Print links of its PRINTCELL lines appear. |
An assignment is looked up by the legal entity the user is logged in to and the screen he is on. A line under one company does nothing for another. There is no shared line that serves every company.
After you change setup
Nomenclatures are held in memory by the server once they have been read. After you save a change to a nomenclature or its rules, refresh the application configuration so the server reads them again, or the old rules keep answering.
An assignment is read fresh by the server every time, but a screen fetches its own line once, when it opens. After you change an assignment, close the screen you are testing and open it again.
Prove it worked
- Log in to the company you set up and open a screen you gave a process line with Scan Enabled. The toolbar now shows Scan barcode.
- Press it, type a code you expect to work into the box, and confirm. The screen should react as the action line says.
- Scan
BF-CMD.SAVEon an open document. It saves. This proves the scanner itself reaches the screen, whatever your action lines say.
Then walk through one full case: Print a batch label on the production order, scan it on Picking List Registration.
