Master Planning
A plan for a manufacturing unit and a date range: lines of items, quantities and required dates, typed or copied from sales orders. Manufacturing orders are raised from it.
What it is for
The plan lines say what to make. The toolbar copies from sales orders: it offers ready sales order lines not yet planned (only approved ones, and without the date range, when the setting hides the dates), and a copied line keeps the order quantity as Actual Order Qty. The plan quantity may be raised but not lowered below it.
Next Action Create Manufacturing Order raises one manufacturing order per plan line that has none yet, of type Standard, status Planned, for the plan date, the item's manufacturing unit, pool and category, with the bill of material lines of the sales order line it came from. A line with no sales order BOM lines, or an item with no manufacturing unit, is refused: make that order on the Manufacturing Order screen instead, picking this plan.
After the plan is saved again, its Planned orders raised by Next Action follow it: a changed quantity re-quantifies the order and its BOM lines, a changed required date moves its delivery date, and a removed line deletes its Planned order. Once an order has left Planned it is never changed, and the plan line's quantity can then no longer change. A plan with manufacturing orders cannot be deleted. Material requirement planning also starts from a plan.

How to configure it
On Manufacture and Controlling Setting: Hide Date From & Date To changes what the copy offers. Required Multiple makes a plan need several lines: no line may stand alone, and with Required Quatity above 1 the plan needs at least that many lines (Base On ITM) or that many different item groups (Base On ITG); otherwise Save says "Product Matrix Authorization failed".

- A furniture maker builds each order to the customer's spec. Copy the sales order lines into a plan, then Next Action Create Manufacturing Order.
