Usage
A usage: what a bill of material or formula is for, and whether it is a BOM or a formula.
What it is for
Every Bill Of Material and Formula names a usage; Type BOM usages are offered on bills of material, FOR usages on formulas. The ticks decide where a BOM may be used:
- Production: the BOM is for items of any manufacturing category except Assembly Order.
- Assembly: for items of category Assembly Order. Only a BOM type usage may be Assembly.
- Costing, Template and Subcontracting: such BOMs are not offered on a manufacturing order. A Template usage also skips the alternate-BOM check, and on a formula with a Subcontracting usage a Default Vendor is required.
- Kit: recorded; nothing reads it today.

There is nothing to configure beyond the fields above. Which fields are shown, required or hidden can be changed per company by the consultant in the screen configuration.
Scenarios
- A factory keeps a costing BOM apart from the one used on the floor. Two usages, one with Costing ticked; the costing BOM is never offered on an order.
- A garment maker sends cutting to a subcontractor. A Subcontracting usage; the formula needs the default vendor.
What it is connected to
- Bill Of Material - names a BOM usage
- Formula - names a FOR usage
- Purchase Order - subcontracting purchase orders
If something looks wrong
- "Assembly can select in BOM Type" Assembly needs Type BOM.
- My BOM is not offered on the manufacturing order. Its usage is Costing, Template or Subcontracting, or the BOM is not approved or not valid on the order date.
