Bill Of Material

A bill of material: for one item and a date range, the components and their quantities for a base quantity, with scrap, cost and the routing.

Where
Manufacturing › Bom / Formula
Who uses it
The production engineer
When
Before the item is made, and when the recipe changes
Needs first
The item released with Replenishment for manufacturing, a BOM Unit and Type BOM; a Usage of type BOM; components released in the company

What it is for

You pick the usage and the item, then press Create; the item is then locked and the lines open. For each line, Total Quantity is Quantity plus scrap, and Quantity Per Unit is Total Quantity divided by the BOM Quantity (or Total Quantity itself when Fixed), divided by Utilized Quantity. The manufacturing order multiplies Quantity Per Unit by its quantity.

What people get wrong: a Manufacturing Order only offers BOMs that are approved, valid on its date, for its site, and whose usage is not Costing, Template or Subcontracting. When an approval is set up for this screen, Approved is cleared on save and set by the approver's decision.

Two BOMs of the same item, variant and project with overlapping dates: the second is saved only as an alternate, after you confirm. Once a manufacturing order uses the BOM, its item, quantity, dates, routing, site, usage and approval are locked, and its dates can only change within the orders' dates.

Co-Products & By-Products and the catch weight and batch fields show only for FOR usages, so on a BOM they stay hidden.

How to configure it

There is nothing to configure beyond the fields above. Which fields are shown, required or hidden can be changed per company by the consultant in the screen configuration.

Scenarios

  • A furniture maker makes a table from a top, four legs and screws. One BOM with Quantity 1: top 1, legs 4, screws 16, each flushing B.
  • A steel fabricator loses 5 percent of plate to offcuts. Put 5 in Scrap %; Total Quantity and the order quantity grow by 5 percent.
  • A factory switches to a new component from next month. A new BOM valid from next month, and end the old one the day before.

What it is connected to

If something looks wrong

  • "Valid From cannot be greater than Valid To" Fix the dates.
  • "The dates cannot be changed because a manufacturing order has already been created ..." Keep the dates around the existing orders' dates, or cancel those orders.
  • "... - Line ID: ... - Item cannot be empty" / "... Unit cannot be empty" Fill the line.
  • "... - Line ID: ... - Item is variant, please define" Pick the variant of the component.
  • "... - Line ID: ... - Quantity cannot be zero or negative" / "... Utilized Quantity cannot be zero or negative" Enter positive quantities.
  • "... - Line ID: ... - Project Category cannot be empty" The BOM has a project. Fill Project Category on each line.
  • "... - Line ID: ... - Operation cannot be empty" The BOM has a routing. Name the operation on each line.
  • "... - Line ID: ... - Flushing Indicator cannot be empty" Pick B or M.
  • "Co-Products & By-Products - Line ID: ... - Item Variant Cannot be Empty" Pick the variant.
  • "... - Base Quantity cannot be zero or less then zero" Enter a Quantity above zero.
  • "... Lines Data cannot be Empty" Add component lines.
  • A question asks whether to save it as an alternate BOM. Another BOM of the same item, variant and project overlaps these dates. Confirm to save it as an alternate, or change the dates.
