How do I see whether a project is making money?

Load the Project Profitability list for the estimate, contract value, billed, still to bill, actual cost and margin of each project; Project Estimation vs Actual for budget against actual per activity and category; and the Project Accounting board.

Needs first
Estimations, contracts and billing proposals; cost documents naming the project

Steps

  1. Open Project Profitability (Project Accounting › Analytics). Criteria Project, or none for all. Load.
  2. Open Project Estimation vs Actual for one estimation to see where the money went.
  3. Open the Project and its Timeline tab to see every document raised.

Check it worked

  • Margin is Billed less Actual Cost; Cost Variance is Actual Cost less the estimate.

Nothing in this task posts to the accounts.

If something looks wrong

  • Actual cost is zero. No stock issue, receipt or expense submission names the project.
  • Billed is zero but invoices were sent. Billed counts billing proposals only, not customer invoices.
