How do I add to the cost of an asset already on the books?
Make an Asset Acquisition with the activity Acquisition Adjustment on the asset. Its whole amount is added to the value still to depreciate, and straight line spreads it over the life left from its date.
Steps
- Open Asset Acquisition, New. Posting Date on or after the asset's last depreciation; Activity Acquisition Adjustment; the Asset (only assets still carrying a value are offered); the Asset Book. Create.
- Type the Acquisition Amount and the Offset Account the cost was booked to.
- Save. If depreciation has already run up to or past the posting date, the screen asks "Back-dated adjustment": past periods are not worked out again. Save anyway, or cancel and reverse the later runs first.
Check it worked
- Asset Transactions shows the adjustment, and the book value rises by its amount.
What posts
| Document | When | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asset Acquisition, Acquisition Adjustment | Save, in a book with Post To General Ledger | The asset group's asset cost account, from the Fixed Assets posting profile | Offset Account on the document |
If something looks wrong
- "You Cannot Create Asset Acquisition before this ...". The posting date is before the asset's last entry. Move it on.
- "You Cannot Create Asset Acquisition After this ...". The straight-line asset's life has ended.
- The next depreciation run refuses: "There are some Asset Adjustment in Park mode". The adjustment was saved parked. Post it.
