Sale Category

A Sale Category is something you sell without stock: a service, labour, an installation, a charge. An order line of the sale category kind picks one, and takes its unit, tax group and revenue account from it.

What it is for

A sales line need not be an item. A sale category line has no stock, no site and no reservation. The revenue account comes from the posting profile, which can name an account per sale category.

The one rule people get wrong: a category without a posting profile line is not offered on order lines. The order line lookup lists only categories that have their account in the default posting profile.

How to configure it

Create the category, then add its line to the posting profile (Posting Profile) with the revenue account.

Scenarios

  • An equipment dealer selling annual maintenance per machine. A category Maintenance with Required Service Object: each order line names the machine, one per line.

What it is connected to

If something looks wrong

  • The category is not offered on the order line - it has no posting profile line, or it is blocked.
  • "Sales Order - Line ID : ... Service Object is required for this Sales Category." - fill the line's Service Object.
  • "Sales Order - Line ID : ... Quantity must be 1 when Service Object is required." - one line per service object.
